Editing Great Videos

Whether you're creating a social advertising video, social entertainment content, or instructional video, knowing when and how to cut video enables you to shape the narrative and direct the viewer's focus.

This means you can turn raw footage into a polished, coherent story that resonates with your audience. Additionally, cutting is crucial when fitting a video into a specific time frame, like a 30-second social clip.

Synchronise your Video and Audio Cuts

When making cuts, you need to maintain the narrative continuity; the viewer should not feel disoriented after a cut. Think about what the cut is achieving: Is it moving the story forward, revealing new information, or building suspense?
Make sure cuts align with the rhythm of the video and the accompanying sound or music. You can easily synchronise your sound with video clips in the Cerebriam Studio sound editor.
Hard cuts can offer a punch, while softer, more gradual transitions can ease viewers from one scene to another.
Also consider the emotion you're trying to evoke; abrupt cuts can create tension, while longer, lingering shots might generate a sense of calm.

Best Video Cuts For Impact

In video editing, there are several types of cuts that can be used to shape the narrative and convey different emotions. We’ll cover the basics here:
A jump cut is the most popular and transitions directly from one shot to the next. This could be one clip to a different but related clip, or it could be one clip to a zoomed version of the same clip. It’s typically in a sequential clip that makes the subject appear to jump from one spot to the other, often used to show time passing.
A match cut connects two scenes through visual, audio, or thematic similarities, providing a sense of continuity. For instance, a character might reach for a door handle, then the next shot shows them opening a door in a different location.
An L-cut maintains the audio from the initial scene into the following one, creating an auditory bridge.
Conversely, a J-cut starts the audio from the next scene before the visual transition, providing a lead-in.
You can make all of these video cuts in Cerebriam Studio.

Video Cutting
FAQ’s

The ideal length of your video can vary based on your target social platform. On Instagram, feed videos can be up to 60 seconds, Stories can be 15 seconds, and IGTV videos can be up to 60 minutes. On Twitter, videos can be up to 140 seconds. Facebook allows videos of up to 240 minutes, but shorter videos of about 1-2 minutes tend to perform better. TikTok, a platform built around short-form video, accepts videos of up to 60 seconds. In general, it’s best to keep videos short, engaging, and to the point.

There are several video editing tools available, both free and paid. Adobe Premiere Rush, iMovie, and Filmora are all good options. For mobile devices, apps like InShot, CapCut, and Adobe Premiere Clip are helpful. These tools allow you to cut and trim your videos, add music or voice-overs, apply text animation, and more. Cerebriam Studio has all these features and the benefit or creating for multiple social platforms simultaneously – saving you 50% of your time.

To maintain quality, ensure you’re exporting in the highest resolution that the social media platform supports, this will often be 1080p. The Cerebriam Studio render engine will automatically calculate the best technical specifications including resolution, frame rate, bit rate, and file size, when it’s rendering your videos. Keep in mind some other video editors compress the video when you upload, which can reduce quality. Using high-quality source footage can help mitigate this.

Simply upload your video to cerebriam.com, select your aspect ratio, in the editor moving the playhead to the point where you want to make a cut, and then use the scissors button to make the cut. You can then delete the parts of the video you don’t want.

With Cerebriam Studio you can easily make video content optimised for different social media platforms. For instance, make Instagram 1:1 (square) feed posts, Instagram Stories 9:16 (vertical), as well as YouTube 16:9 (horizontal), and many more aspect ratios.
